The firm was founded in the late 1800s by one Maurice Gosschalk.
He subsequently went into partnership with his son, Edward,
and one Walter Wheldon. After the addition of another partner,
the firm became known as Gosschalk Austin and Wheldon.
In 1959 Walter's son, Terry joined the firm. Following the death
of his father, Terry's articles were transferred to Edward Gosschalk
and the firm became known as Gosschalk Wheldon & Co. From
this small beginning, the firm has grown. In 1986 a local legal
practice, Chambers Thomas & Williamson, merged with the
firm and the name of the combined firm changed to Gosschalk
Wheldon Chambers Thomas.
The firm had practised for many years from premises in Silver
Street. After the merger, office premises in Parliament Street,
the former home of Chambers Thomas & Williamson, were added
and subsequently an office in Bowlalley Lane had to be acquired
to accommodate the expanding firm.
A decision was made to house the whole firm under one roof and
to prepare a strategy for the next period of the firm's development.
The firm shortened its name to Gosschalks and moved to its current
Queen Gardens home in 1994 where it is equipped with the latest
information technology systems and is in the strong position
of being able to respond to the demands of both its local and
national clients. The firm now has 28 partners who all specialise
in their own areas of law.
The firm prides itself in having highly motivated and loyal
support staff with an envied working relationship between lawyers
and staff which is reflected in the quality of the advice and
service it provides. It considers itself to be at the cutting
edge of what is a rapidly evolving legal world offering a fast,
efficient, friendly and cost effective service which has resulted
in the development of good relationships with an ever expanding
client base.
