Matthew graduated with a First Class LLB from the University of Hull and also gained a Distinction for the Legal Practice Course at the University of Sheffield.
Having undertaken his training contract with Gosschalks, Matthew qualified into the Commercial Litigation Department and was subsequently made a Partner in 2005.
Matthew is an experienced Commercial Litigator who specialises in resolving commercial disputes primarily in the construction and property sectors. He has extensive experience of dealing with Court proceedings, Arbitrations, Mediations and Adjudications for both local and national companies.
Matthew has prepared various articles on all aspects of construction and property litigation. Most recently his professional advice article concerning the Anderson case was published in Property Week. He also regularly organises and presents Seminars to professionals from the construction industry and is a member of the Property Litigation Association, the RICS Dilapidations Forum and the Professional Negligence Lawyers’ Association.
In his time with Gosschalks, Matthew has been involved in a number of leading construction cases that have been reported in the law reports including:
Hortimax Limited -v- Hedon Salads Limited [2004] Adj. L.R - 10/15 where Matthew acted for the successful Claimant in connection with the enforcement of an adjudicator’s award where the jurisdiction of the adjudicator was disputed.
Anderson Antiques (UK) Limited -v- Anderson Wharf (Hull) Limited [2007] EWHC 2086 (Ch). Matthew acted for the Claimant who was successful in obtaining novel relief for a statutory tort under Section 77 of the Land Registration Act 2002.
Reynolds -v- Shepherd Construction [2009] EWHC 1603(TCC) and [2010] EWCA Civ 283 (Court of Appeal). Matthew acted for the successful party, Reynolds, in recovering £2 million in relation to a dispute concerning a pay-when-paid clause which Shepherd had attempted to rely on.
