Gosschalks’s legal eagle takes to the sky for local charity
Rachel Garton, a partner in the Litigation department at Gosschalks, really was a high flying legal eagle on Sunday 11th October 2015 as she faced a daunting charity sky diving challenge in support of the Smile Foundation’s Smile by the Sea campaign.
The plucky lawyer, who ‘won’ her place during a fun game at the Gosschalks staff Christmas Party, was part of a fundraising tandem sky diving group who travelled to the Sky Dive centre in Hibaldstow, Brigg.
Rachel made the leap of faith out of a plane by descending 15,000 feet at the rip-roaring speed of 120mph to help raise money and awareness for the charity.
“We are so grateful to all the skydivers for their support. The money raised by this jump will go such a long way to helping the families who are in need for a short break away to provide much-needed respite.
“The project offers priority to those with long-term or life-limiting illness, families in crisis, disabled children and young people, families living in deprivation, older people and unpaid carers.
"Breaks are provided to those who are not able to fund a holiday for themselves and are for those who have been referred to us by a local registered charity or constituted body.
“A lot of us are lucky enough to escape our daily lives and enjoy a holiday once or twice a year. But the Office for National Statistics reports almost one in three families can’t afford a one week break away from home.
“We’re delighted to be in a position to run this project and help provide a unique experience and a lifetime of memories families can treasure from having quality time together on a tailor-made break.”
With her feet now firmly back on the ground, Rachel says:
“I must admit this skydive represented a huge personal challenge for me as I had to face my fear of heights head on, but it was for such a good cause I couldn’t refuse.
“Some of these families are in desperate situations and are going through unimaginable circumstances. Just being able to have a short break away can have a hugely positive impact on the family’s lives.”
